About the song: "Natalie"
Written and Sung by myself (Heemin Song)

"I should have loved you more."
I wrote this song based on my feelings for Natalie Cole, the jazz singer. I knew who she was when she was alive, but I guess my ears were not mature enough to understand the value of her songs and how great her voice was. Later, I found that she passed away and there were a lot of compilation about her, which I took a listen to and loved. Then I realised, why haven't I loved her enough? Soon I began to write, sincerely with my heart. It was an amazing experience - I did not need to try something artificial to make the song smoother. I followed my heart and it turned out to be a both good and fit song for me.

Personal Statement:
I played piano from my childhood that naturally gave me basic musical knowledges and interest for various kind of music. Back then, for years I had dreamt to be a pianist. However there always had been a gap between the music I pursue–Korean pop music- and what I actually did–classical piano-. Then in 2009, when I was 11, I studied abroad in New Zealand at my cousins¡¯. Due to the lack of language skills and connection with other children, I spent all day for watching music videos. To a girl with loneliness, Love Story by Taylor Swift blew up my mind that I started to get interested for western pop music. I often played her and other pop songs by piano. One day my uncle told me that I need to write songs of my own, not only copying others¡¯ songs. That was the first time that I cognised the concept of songwriting. At the time, I decided to be a musician who can make listeners joyful and happy.
Coming back to Korea, I could take my first Vocal lesson. Learning to sing gave me more that just vocal skills, but let me get into the deeper musical world. Along with these experiences, I wrote my first etude by the time of 14. Like my decision back then, I always tried to write happy songs. However, as time passes, I felt painful and stressed trying to write joyful songs when I was feeling depressed. Meanwhile, I encountered British pop Artists, mostly female such as Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse and Adele. Their music taught me that people could be healed by sad and reminiscing lines. It definitely widened my sight on music and made my repertoire much versatile. Though I kept getting lessons for Vocals major, I always simultaneously worked for songwriting and other skills; computer music, harmonics and playing different instruments. I auditioned for my original songs and end up entering a Korean university, majoring Post Modern Music.
I have learnt a lot of things so far from my current university. To write a few, skills to listen to other instruments, to communicate with other players and to control mixers or other sound systems. However, whilst attending to the university, I found various dysfunction that I thought I would not be able to get enough education to be improved. Basically there have not been delicate curriculum; frequent changes every term that one could not focus on a subject or even got lost in the middle because the professors changed too often. Plus, unbalanced quota led to a big discomfort to form a band or to start a project. I realised I would not get to the real industry under this system. I decided to take a gap year and work. Not like previous two years working only after the university studies. However, I started to work both for my finance for the further education and career in music; I worked for a music academy and taught students and performed as an artist on different venues and applied for many contests, including the KT&G¡¯s that gave me the honour to perform for Suwon Jazz Festival.
Experiences from my gap year let me sum up with the two opposite ideas; Firstly, challenging to have a music-related work could give more knowledge to be a better musician. Secondly, I need to take higher education to improve myself and make connections with other talented artists. I wondered about how could I fulfill those two ideas together and decided to go abroad, to the core of the pop industry and study there.
I have been through repetitive doubts about what I actually want to do musically. However, by recalling the memories from my childhood, I can faithfully say that pop music is the goal of my life. All the worries and detour made me the best person for the pop industry and the best student for the popular music major. I understand and enjoy the traditional and complex musical background of pop songs as much as I love the superficial and repetitive characteristic. I am certain that I will achieve the great accomplishment with your education and environment both as a student and a musician you will be proud of.
