John Mayer Just Has to Please the Girls

John Mayer, at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Monday.

¡°I should be having sex with more girls.¡± This is what John Mayer concluded, using slightly more colorful language, last Sunday night at his anonymously modern apartment in SoHo.

They¡¯re everywhere, after all, and Mr. Mayer has not been unwilling in the past. But the last couple of years, full of tabloids and TMZ, have taken their toll.

¡°It¡¯s crazy to me that in my head, that being 32 and dating women is going to get me in trouble,¡± he said, talking faster as he went along. ¡°I can¡¯t even explain to you how terrible that feels, that I equate dating a woman with punishment, shame, guilt, disappointment, reproach, reprimand, persecution. It¡¯s a nightmare.¡±

Being an ambivalent, self-aware heartthrob has its downsides, it turns out, and Mr. Mayer, who in his day job is one of the most popular soft-rock singers of the last decade, isn¡¯t shy about sharing them. In the three years since his last album, the double-platinum ¡°Continuum¡± (Columbia), was released, he¡¯s become a demiceleb of the tabloid world, as well known his arm candy — Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston — and his tests of will with the media as his music. But now it¡¯s music time again, right?

Á¸ ¸ÞÀ̾îÀÇ ÃֱپٹüÀÌ ³ª¿Â ÀÌ·¡ Áö³ 3³â Áß ´õºí Ç÷¡Æ¼³ÑÀ» ±â·ÏÇÑ ¡°Continuum¡± ¾Ù¹üÀÌ Ãâ½ÃµÇ¾ú°í, ±×´Â ±×ÀÇ ¿¬ÀÎÀ¸·Î ¾Ë·ÁÁø Á¦½ÃÄ« ½É½¼, Á¦´ÏÆÛ ¾Ö´Ï½ºÅæÀ¸·Î ÀÎÇØ Àü ¼¼°è Ÿºí·ÎÀ̵åÁöÀÇ Ç¥ÀûÀÌ µÇ¾ú´Ù.

If Mr. Mayer has successfully put his cynicism about women and romance into one album, then ¡°Battle Studies¡± (Columbia), released on Tuesday, is it — ¡°one record about one thing,¡± Mr. Mayer said. It¡¯s claustrophobic and, him, somewhat dark. Most of the songs are skeptical about love, and about lovers, and about anyone looking and passing judgment from the outside in.

¸¸¾à Á¸ ¸ÞÀ̾ ±×ÀÇ ¿©¼º°ú ·Î¸Ç½º¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ½Ã´ÏÄÃÇÔÀ» ¼º°øÀûÀ¸·Î ¾Ù¹ü¿¡ Åõ¿©ÇÏ¿´´Ù¸é, ¡°Battle Studies¡± ¾Ù¹üÀÌ È¿äÀÏ¿¡ ¹ß¸ÅµÈ´Ù. ¡°ÇÑ°¡Áö¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ÇϳªÀÇ ±â·Ï¡± À̶ó°í ¸ÞÀ̾î´Â ¸»Çß´Ù. ±×°ÍÀº ´Ù¼Ò ¾îµÓ´Ù. ´ëºÎºÐÀÇ ³ë·¡µéÀº »ç¶û°ú »ç¶ûÇÏ´Â »ç¶÷µé¿¡ ´ëÇÑ È¸ÀÇÀûÀÎ ³»¿ë¿¡ ´ëÇÑ °ÍÀÌ´Ù.

Yet someone as articulate and transfixing about relationships and their discontents as Mr. Mayer is in person, in his music he takes a simpler route. Though in the last three years many things about his life have changed, not much about his records has.

Mr. Mayer is a precise and gifted underachiever.

(Áß·«)

¡°There¡¯s nothing I¡¯ve done musically that¡¯s been a wild misstep,¡± he said. ¡°Basically, you¡¯re saying, can you risk failure? And that¡¯s something that I¡¯m struggling with right now, because in my life, I would like to do something in music that risks a misstep.¡±

¡°I¡¯m too young to be that dependable,¡± he continued. ¡°I don¡¯t want to be that dependable. Something pendulous has to happen. If I¡¯m as self-aware as I say I am, then I would probably know that pretty soon, there¡¯s going to have to be a wrench thrown somewhere so that the momentum keeps moving ward.¡±

¡°³»°¡ ±×°ÍÀ» ¹Þ¾ÆµéÀ̱⿡´Â ³Ê¹« ¾î·È´Ù¡± °í À̾ú´Ù. ¡°³ª´Â ±×°ÍÀ» ¹Þ¾ÆµéÀÌ°í ½ÍÁö ¾Ê¾Ò´Ù. ¹«¾ð°¡ Èçµé¸²ÀÌ ÀϾ´Ù. ³»°¡ ¸¸¾à ³»°¡ ´©±ºÁö¿¡ ´ëÇØ ¸»ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÕ´Â ÀÚ°¢À» °¡Áö°í ÀÕ´Ù¸é, ±× ¶© ³ª´Â ¾Æ¸¶µµ ¾îµò°¡¿¡ ´øÁ®Áø °íÅëÀÌ µÉ °ÍÀÓÀ» °ð ¾Ë ¼ö ÀÖÀ» °ÍÀÌ´Ù.

That wrench is not in ¡°Battle Studies,¡± Mr. Mayer¡¯s fourth album, which, despite its persistent pessimism, remains polite and affable, vulnerable enough to ensure that his female fans — and those are the ones who count — won¡¯t stray. His sweet voice is intact, as is the immediately accessible soft blues-rock he has practically trademarked.

It¡¯s hard to listen to ¡°Battle Studies¡± without wondering: This is the same person who delivered a homily about ending his relationship with Ms. Aniston on a New York street corner in front of a TMZ camera? Who (jokingly, he insists) tussled with a reporter New York magazine¡¯s Web site, nymag.com, resulting in a piece headlined ¡°John Mayer Threatens to Sodomize Us¡±?

(Áß·«)

Inadvertently, perhaps, the album highlights the extremely blatant chasm between John Mayer the musician and John Mayer the public character, a divide Mr. Mayer said he was eager to maintain.

¡°What is the odd man out,¡± he said, ¡°is it the record or the coverage? I¡¯m not going to let it be the record. I think if you¡¯re listening to ¡®Battle Studies¡¯ and you think it¡¯s a record about high-profile relationships, I haven¡¯t done a good enough job.¡±

Whatever the case, Talmudists will certainly have their way with the lyric sheet. ¡°Had a little love but I spread it thin,¡± Mr. Mayer sings at the outset of ¡°Perfectly Lonely,¡± ¡°Falling in her arms and out again/Made a bad name my game around town.¡±

(Áß·«)

On ¡°Half of My Heart,¡± a duet with Taylor Swift and the album¡¯s best song, he sings, ¡°Half of my heart is a shotgun wedding to a bride with a paper ring/But half of my heart is the part of a man who¡¯s never truly loved anything.¡±

Mr. Mayer doesn¡¯t only struggle with the public-private split, though. Dumped in the middle of ¡°Battle Studies¡± is ¡°Crossroads,¡± a completely context-free version of Robert Johnson¡¯s ¡°Crossroad Blues¡±: it¡¯s as if Mr. Mayer had a need to assert that despite the tabloids, and despite the love-song piffle, his chops remain unharmed.

(Áß·«)

He is, after all, one of the most technically skilled guitar players of the day. It earned him a spot at the Michael Jackson tribute concert in July, playing an affecting version of ¡°Human Nature.¡± And at Jay-Z¡¯s Sept. 11 concert at Madison Square Garden, he was the unexpected highlight, toughening up ¡°U Don¡¯t Know¡± and ¡°D.O.A (Death of Auto-Tune).¡±

But virtuosity does not a star make, and Mr. Mayer has proven adept at displaying it in flashes — enough to impress, not enough to appear dull.

Still, there¡¯s something of the showoff in Mr. Mayer, as was on display last Monday at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. It was a MySpace-sponsored show that had been announced just a few days bee, full of fans who had waited in line hours to get in. Most were women in their 20s.

In a sleeveless shirt, letting his tattoos breathe, Mr. Mayer perversely played with their expectations. It was a classic bait and switch: they came the love songs, but they got a two-hour blues-rock jam instead.
